Message in a Bottle

PromptMartha marries at nineteen, teaches for ten years, and raises three children from the time she is twenty. All the children and the mother graduate from college. But the Madeline has no job, very little money and whales of debt. Debt collectors clog her telephone line, their letters fill her mailbox. Her financial boat, reeking with the stench of poverty, is tipping over. What can I do? Madeline cries, tears dripping pages showing her spoilt credit. One night, eyes glazed with the scales of stress, Madeline peers uncertainly into her foggy horizon, groping for tinges of light. She sees none. But suddenly, she hears a grumpy voice; she turns around startled, and listens more attentively. She hears it again. It said, “I will be poor no more.” “‘Will, be poor no more,’” Madeline repeats. All night. In her sleep. In her dream. Next day, she wakes up, repeating “‘Will, be poor no more. Will, be poor no more.’” Determined to find ‘Will,' Madeline does something so bold, so creative, so simple, that it yanks her from the planks of poverty. Were you once in a similar poverty boat?
